Episode 1
"A Hard Day's Night"
March 27, 2005

The episode opens with Meredith Grey, daughter of famous surgeon Elles Grey, waking up from a night of partying, and a night of sex. She shoos away her evenings companion, Derek, saying she'll be late for her first day of work. She is a first year intern at Seattle Grace Hospital and is working alongside some colorful characters. Christina Yang is a highly competitive Stanford graduate who befriends Meredith. George O'Malley is a quirky warm hearted man who, after failing his first scrub in operation, is labeled as 007 (licensed to kill). Izze Stevens is a former model who is forced to perform rectal exams. And Alex Karev is an arrogant jerk who misdiagnoses a patient on his first shift. Over seeing them is Miranda Bailey, affectionately dubbed 'The Nazi', and Meredith's new best friend from the night before, Derek Sheperd. Meredith's first assignment is to help a 15 year girl with unexplainable seizures.

Episode 2
"The First Cut is the Deepest"

The surgical staff tries to be optimistic as a young woman clings to life after a brutal attack. Meanwhile Meredith puts her career on the line to save a newborn in the hospital nursery, and the other interns learn that it takes more than just medical knowledge to be good at their jobs.

Episode 3
"Winning a Battle, Losing the War"
April 10, 2005

When the annual bicycle messenger race takes place in Seattle, the hospital emergency room fills with an assortment of injuries, causing the interns to compete for the most severe cases. Meanwhile, Derek and Burke compete for chief of surgery, and while Derek continues to pursue Meredith romantically, a patient flirts with George.

Episode 4
"No Man's Land"

Cristina's encounter with a former nurse, now a patient at Seattle Grace, changes her forever; Derek and Meredith treat a construction worker who has miraculously survived an injury but is now faced with tough decisions about his future; and a patient recognizes Izzie from a lingerie ad, which makes her the subject of hospital gossip.

Episode 5
"Shake Your Groove Thing"
April 24, 2005

Meredith realizes how serious things have become in her life and that she needs to stand up and take more responsibility as her mother's condition worsens. Meredith is excited to get her first cardiac surgery on the books, however this enthussiasm quickly turns to fear as she falls asleep during the procedure and thinks she may have damaged the patient's heart. Meanwhile Izzie gets a party ready for her boyfriend Hank. At the party Cristina and Dr. Burke get close and Derek and Meredith get caught by Dr. Bailey.

Episode 6
"If Tomorrow Never Comes"
May 1, 2005

Izzie pushes George to ask Meredith out on a date; meanwhile a patient comes in with a world-record-breaking sized tumor. Dr. Bailey (who recently found out about Meredith and Derek) advises Meredith to end it before both their careers are ruined. Cristina and Burke's relationship also becomes more difficult.

Episode 7
"The Self Destruct Button"

Meredith and Derek continue to date but try to keep things as discreet as possible while in Meredith's house; however their uniformly grizzly appearance shows everyone what is really going on. George thinks that an anesthesiologist is drinking before surgery but is too scared to speak up. One of Alex's patients is a former competitor who now self-mutilates. Cristina gets the flu, but still tries to keep her normal pace.

Episode 8
"Save Me"
May 15, 2005

Meredith realizes that she knows nothing about Derek's life and becomes frustrated with his lack of honesty. Alex treats a patient who's religious beliefs interfere with his treatment and Izzie ponders getting in touch with her mother who she hasn't spoken to in years. A pregnant woman in her mid-forties gets diagnosed with cancer and a patient thinks he's psychic.

Episode 9
"Who's Zoomin' Who?"
May 22, 2005

An STD outbreak at Seattle Grace affects various hospital staff members. Dr. Webber calls a meeting to 'talk' about this problem. The chief also tells Derek about his own health problems. Izzie and Cristina try to help a patient who's daughter and wife disagree on the proper course of action. One of Burke's patients turns out to be an old college buddy. Meanwhile Derek and Meredith seem to be getting very close until a bombshell is dropped at the end of the episode.
